Ford aims to sell 100,000 units of its Fathom electric truck during its first year on the market, according to people familiar with the matter cited by The Wall Street Journal. Ford Targets Sales of 100,000 Electric Fathom Trucks in Its First Year

Ford has set an internal target of selling 100,000 units of its upcoming Fathom electric truck during its first year on the market, according to people familiar with the matter cited by The Wall Street Journal. If that figure is achieved in the United States, the truck would immediately enter the list of best-selling electric vehicles and could become the best-selling electric model from a company other than Tesla, assuming competing models' figures remain close to their current levels.

According to the information available, the figure is not an official forecast publicly announced by Ford or a reflection of actual purchase orders, but rather an internal target tied to the truck's launch plan. The company is preparing to begin Fathom production in the first quarter of 2027, while its starting price is expected to be slightly below $30,000.

What Do We Know About Fathom?

Ford has been developing the truck for several years and established a center for developing new manufacturing methods that it described as a “skunkworks” project. In recent months, the company has revealed limited parts of the project, either directly or through sightings and field testing.

Among the information previously disclosed is that the truck will include a charging port based on the NACS standard, after a test vehicle was spotted near a Tesla Supercharger station. Fathom was also seen covered in camouflage during hot-weather testing on the streets of Las Vegas. Ford has not yet disclosed all of the truck's specifications or details of its final equipment.

Why Does This Target Matter?

Selling 100,000 units of a single electric model in one year would be a major achievement in the U.S. market; the article indicates that Tesla is the only company to have surpassed that figure for a single model in one year. According to the estimate presented, this would place Fathom approximately in third place among the best-selling electric vehicles if other models' sales remain at similar levels.

More importantly, the target price could give Ford direct access to the lower-priced electric vehicle segment. In terms of its advertised price, Fathom will compete with the updated Chevy Bolt and could affect the position of the anticipated Slate truck, which is expected to start at $25,000.

The Real Test Will Be Price and Execution

Ford has had a more complicated previous experience with the electric F-150 Lightning truck. The truck was among the standouts in its category and even surpassed Tesla Cybertruck sales, but it did not come close to the sales figures Ford had expected; the source attributes this partly to its launch price being higher than the initial promises. The model was ultimately canceled.

Ford says it learned from that experience and is focusing this time on reducing costs. However, this target remains conditional on two factors that have not yet been settled: keeping the starting price stable at launch and the final truck's ability to offer compelling value when it reaches customers. Therefore, the figure of 100,000 units currently represents a commercial ambition, not a guaranteed result.
