New Details About the DMZ Mode in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4

Activision and Infinity Ward have revealed the first extensive set of details about the DMZ mode in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, ahead of the game’s launch on October 23. This time, the mode returns without a beta designation, with a standalone map called Hajin and a play area known as the Exclusion Zone.

The Return of the Extraction Format

DMZ is built around an extraction-style gameplay loop: players land in Hajin, complete objectives, collect loot, and then try to extract with it. Because the mode combines PvE and PvP, players will have to face AI-controlled enemies and real players at the same time. The company has not currently announced an AI-only game mode.

DMZ has its own progression path reaching level 70, while general experience points and weapon experience continue to count. Progression unlocks new stations inside the Forward Operating Base, along with crafting recipes and rewards that help improve loadouts.

A Base That Evolves With the Player

The Forward Operating Base, or FOB, serves as the command center for all DMZ operations. The base starts with limited capabilities and expands as the player progresses. From the beginning, it includes five stations for managing operators, inventory, mission directives, the firing range, and survival kits.

The base also includes the Deploy station, which is always available for traveling to Hajin. As players progress, they can unlock seven additional stations, some dedicated to tracking progression and cosmetic items, and others to crafting and obtaining better equipment using resources or DMZ Cash.

Missions, Loot, and Progression

Players progress in DMZ by exploring, fighting, completing objectives at points of interest, and collecting resources. The 3D Printer station in the FOB helps identify areas of the map where requested items are likely to be found.

Side Ops allow players to explore Hajin, collect materials, and obtain information about boss locations, while Dynamic Operations award DMZ Cash, experience points, and supply drops whose quality improves as the number of completed missions increases. Loot includes supplies such as armor plates and bandages, keys that unlock rooms with better loot, as well as underground entrances scattered throughout rural areas.

DMZ Orders guide players through the early stages, helping them understand the progression path and follow the story. After each operation, an After Action Report appears even if extraction fails, with a rating ranging from F to S++. The report displays the player’s performance and experience progression in the DMZ Rank and Dog Tag level, which is tied to upgrading operator attributes.

Why Does This News Matter?

DMZ offers a different path from traditional multiplayer and Warzone by putting the value of loot and progression up against the risk of losing the results of an operation because of another player. The division of Hajin into low- and high-threat areas also links the level of risk to the quality of objectives and rewards.

However, important practical questions remain unanswered ahead of launch, including how suitable the mode will be for solo players, the nature of the balance between experienced and new players, and how seasonal content will be added. Infinity Ward hinted at bosses and new maps or additional sections of Hajin, but their details have not yet been revealed.
