BMW prepares to launch its three-row luxury electric SUV iX7 in 2027

German automaker BMW is preparing to strengthen its presence in the luxury electric vehicle market by unveiling its anticipated three-row seat vehicle, to be known as the iX7, sitting atop the company's electric vehicle lineup upon its official launch in 2027.

This step comes as part of the company's comprehensive plans to update the longstanding large X7 class models in conjunction with the launch of its second generation in two versions: traditional internal combustion and fully electric. Although recently spotted camouflaged prototype models show some design changes, the new car will not entirely adopt the radical design of the "Neue Klasse" platform as happened with the smaller iX3 model.

Design and Interior Details of the New iX7

Leaks and field observations indicate that the car will retain a relatively traditional design identity that combines touches of the large class with a slimmer, more upright kidney front grille instead of the traditional wide grille. The company is also dispensing with traditional protruding door handles in favor of small handles integrated into the pillars, while retaining the split headlights.

Inside, the cabin draws inspiration for its dashboard and center console from the new X5 models, while incorporating the latest technologies taken from the 7 Series cars, which are leading the efforts to introduce Neue Klasse technologies into existing models. Optional equipment includes a massive 31.3-inch 8K rear entertainment screen, in addition to a dedicated 14.6-inch front passenger screen, and touch control panels on the rear doors.

Expected Performance and Technical Technologies

Mechanically, the iX7 is expected to rely on a dual-motor electric drive system that distributes torque to all four wheels, inspired by the specifications of its sister iX5 60 xDrive, which produces a total power output of 578 horsepower and a torque of up to 593 lb-ft, enabling it to accelerate with high efficiency.

In addition, the platform is expected to support a massive battery with a capacity of 144 kWh to provide a driving range approaching 435 miles per single charge, while adopting an 800-volt electrical system that supports ultra-fast charging capabilities that may reach over 460 kW, allowing for significant driving distances to be added within just a few minutes.

Commercial production of the new generation of X7 and iX7 models is scheduled to begin in late 2027 at the company's plant in Spartanburg, South Carolina, USA, entering a new phase of competition in the luxury electric SUV sector.
