Rivian Launches Major Update for Electric Delivery Vans with Larger Battery and All-Wheel Drive

Rivian has started delivering the first major hardware upgrade to its electric delivery vans (EDVs) since production began in 2021. The new updates include a larger battery pack based on lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry to provide a 30 percent increase in driving range, along with a new dual-motor all-wheel-drive option, according to the company's Q3 2026 shareholder presentation.

This step marks the first actual specification upgrade for the delivery vans, which had remained steady for years at an estimated range of about 160 miles per charge. According to U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) certification documents issued in mid-September, the new usable battery capacity is 129 kilowatt-hours, compared to the current 100 kilowatt-hour battery pack, aligning with the percentage increase announced by the company.

What changes practically for users?

The battery and all-wheel-drive upgrade is currently limited to the larger van model (EDV 700), which offers 652 cubic feet of cargo space, while the smaller model (EDV 500) retains the current battery pack and front-wheel-drive system.

These improvements allow logistics operations to expand their coverage to rural networks that require longer distances and more difficult driving conditions, such as rough roads, mud, and snow—conditions where front-wheel-drive vans loaded with packages previously struggled. With the introduction of the all-wheel-drive system and new battery options, the van comes close to achieving a realistic driving range of about 200 miles, a goal Rivian promised when it began delivering vans to Amazon in 2022.

Market expansion and competitive challenges

The timing of this update comes as Rivian seeks to expand its customer base beyond Amazon, which has accounted for the vast majority of van sales since the exclusivity period ended. The full-size electric van market faces changing competition following General Motors' termination of BrightDrop van production in Ontario and Canoo's bankruptcy, making the Ford E-Transit the main remaining alternative in the U.S. market.

These technical improvements open the door for Rivian to target broader sectors such as rural delivery services, utilities, and telecommunications sectors that require longer operational distances without needing closely spaced charging stations, amid anticipation over whether this development will translate into new commercial contracts with companies like Walmart.
