Tesla has enabled the vehicle-to-load feature, known as Vehicle-to-Load or V2L, in Model Y Premium vehicles in the United States and Puerto Rico. The feature allows users to draw up to 2.4 kilowatts of power at 120 volts and 20 amps, using an additional adapter priced at $80.
The feature does not come through built-in outlets in the vehicle. Instead, it requires an accessory that attaches to the other end of the Gen 3 Mobile Connector, the portable charging cable included with new Model Y vehicles and sold separately for $300. The cable handle is connected to the vehicle’s charging port, and the adapter is then attached to the opposite end to provide household electrical outlets supporting up to 20 amps.
Compatibility and How to Get the Adapter
According to Tesla, the adapter can be added during vehicle configuration or purchased later from the Tesla Shop. However, the feature is not available for all Model Y Premium vehicles, and the store listing names three compatible models: Model Y Premium, Model Y Performance, and Cybertruck.
By contrast, the adapter does not support the Model Y Standard or any vehicle in the Model 3 lineup, according to the information in the compatibility list. Tesla previously released the same part for Cybertruck owners in April 2025, at the same price and with the same power limit.
Limited Output Compared with Competitors
With an output of 2.4 kilowatts, Tesla’s feature sits at the entry level of the vehicle-to-load market for electric vehicles. The Hyundai Ioniq 5 has provided 3.6 kilowatts since 2021, with an interior outlet and an adapter for the charging port included in its equipment, while Kia offers the same function in the EV6 and EV9.
The Ford F-150 Lightning starts at 2.4 kilowatts, but reaches 9.6 kilowatts in extended-range trucks through electrical outlets in the front trunk and cargo bed. The Chevrolet Silverado EV, meanwhile, offers up to 10.2 kilowatts.
For practical use, the Tesla adapter’s output is sufficient to run an electric heater, refrigerator, or saw at a worksite or camping equipment, but it does not represent a comprehensive solution for powering a home.
Not a Replacement for Home Backup Power
Home backup power remains unavailable in the Model Y. Tesla’s Powershare page states that the function is not available for the Model S, Model 3, Model X, or Model Y. The Cybertruck, according to the same information, can deliver 11.5 kilowatts to a home for three days or more, and has also received approval for use as a grid-supply asset in cooperation with PG&E in California.
As a result, the Model Y Premium receives a solution intended to power devices outdoors or during trips, rather than a system for powering a home during a power outage. The feature’s activation follows earlier reports that some Model Y versions included the hardware required for bidirectional charging, while enabling the function remained tied to the vehicle’s equipment and Tesla’s policy for the different trims.
