Ford is preparing to begin production of its midsize electric Fathom pickup at the Louisville Assembly plant during the first quarter of 2027, with sales set to begin early the same year at a starting price of $28,350. The pickup will be the first vehicle based on the Universal EV platform, which the company is counting on to change the way it manufactures its electric vehicles.
Ford revealed the pickup’s name and starting price the previous week, after announcing a year earlier its plans to convert the 3-million-square-foot Louisville Assembly plant from producing fuel-powered vehicles to manufacturing fully electric vehicles. Fathom will be the first vehicle produced as part of this transformation.
Investment in the Plant and a New Manufacturing System
Ford is investing approximately $5 billion in the project, including the Louisville Assembly plant and the BlueOval Battery Park Michigan complex. The company said the investment will create 4,000 new jobs at the two sites and will also fund the equipment needed to implement the Universal EV platform.
The UEV Production System differs from Ford’s current assembly methods and those used by most traditional automakers. Instead of a nearly complete vehicle moving along the production line, the vehicle is divided into three main sections: the front section, the rear section, and the battery platform.
Ford will use large castings to build the front and rear sections of the body. A single aluminum part replaces dozens of components previously produced through stamping and welding. According to the company, the number of parts required to build Fathom will fall to two, compared with 146 parts in the current Maverick pickup.
In the third assembly section, interior components, including the seats, storage units, and carpet, are installed on top of the battery casing, which also serves as the vehicle’s floor, and the battery is then installed from below. Ford says this system will enable the plant to assemble Fathom 40% faster than the current vehicles produced at the site.
Automation and Software Checks During Assembly
Bryce Currie, Ford’s chief manufacturing officer, said the new system is more suitable for workers because it reduces the need for twisting, turning, and bending. He added that the company reduced the need to reach over the fender by 84%, while the wiring harness is now more than 4,000 feet shorter and 22 pounds lighter than that of the first generation of Ford electric sport utility vehicles.
The company plans to reinvest part of the time saved by the system in in-house manufacturing operations and automation to improve quality and reduce costs. Louisville Assembly will have the highest level of automation in the final assembly stage among all Ford plants worldwide.
Among the new equipment is a software programming station, the first of its kind at one of the company’s assembly plants. The station enables the latest software to be installed before the vehicle is fully built. Previously, addressing a software issue took approximately 10 minutes per vehicle when it was detected, whereas updates can now be carried out while the vehicle is moving along the production line. The facility’s internal 5G network also enables immediate diagnostics and quality checks.
Fathom Features
Ford says Fathom will offer more interior passenger space than the Toyota RAV4. The pickup will come with a large, high-resolution touchscreen, bidirectional charging that supports vehicle-to-load (V2L) power delivery, a digital key, as well as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard equipment.
Fathom will be the first vehicle to include direct integration of Apple Maps into the navigation system, with turn-by-turn directions, routing tailored for electric vehicles, and other features. The new production system and assembly tree are scheduled to begin operating in the first quarter of 2027, coinciding with the start of pickup production.
