The lawsuit was filed Thursday in San Francisco by Clarkson Law Firm, and alleges that Oura rings cannot measure the physiological signals necessary to assess sleep quality or identify its stages, instead relying on AI-generated estimates that the complaint describes as having no better than a “coin-flip-like chance” of being correct.

The case follows years of online complaints from Oura users about the accuracy of sleep data. Some users said they felt their sleep had been poor while the ring told them their sleep was perfect, while others questioned the device’s ability to monitor and detect sleep cycles.

What does the complaint say?

The lawsuit is based on the allegation that Oura sold tracking rings starting at $300 and marketed them as capable of seeing what can be seen only in hospital sleep laboratories, including the four stages of sleep. The complaint argues that accurately identifying sleep stages requires electrodes placed on the scalp and sensors on the eyes—equipment available in clinical settings, not in a ring worn on a finger.

The complaint also points to Oura’s use of marketing phrases such as “designed for accuracy” and “unmatched accuracy.” It says the company previously told customers that its rings achieved 79% accuracy in their measurements, then later claimed that sleep-stage identification accuracy reached 95% compared with clinical sleep laboratories.

Why does this matter?

The case is not solely about the accuracy of one number, but about the distinction between estimating sleep indicators and clinically measuring sleep stages. A user may treat the results displayed on the device’s screen as a definitive description of their condition, particularly if they use them to interpret how they feel or to change their daily habits. The complaint says that sleep occurs in the brain, not the finger, and that the ring therefore cannot measure sleep or its cycles in the way some marketing claims suggest.

This point remains a legal allegation whose validity has not been decided by the court, and it does not mean that all Oura data are worthless or that its results are necessarily equivalent to random results. But it puts the accuracy claims, and the way they are presented to consumers, under direct legal scrutiny.

What does the lawsuit seek?

The complaint seeks to require Oura to stop describing its products as having capabilities they do not provide. It also requests judicial measures preventing the company from continuing what it considers to be a misleading representation of its products, along with refunds for consumers who purchased the rings based on the disputed claims.

Oura did not immediately respond to TechCrunch’s request for comment. A press release quoted Ryan Clarkson, co-founder and managing partner at Clarkson Law Firm, as saying that misleading information cannot be tolerated when people rely on a device to make decisions related to their health.
